The Android Invasion Extras

Welcome to 2012, Kasterborites! We’ve got a nice couple of clips here from the forthcoming UNIT Tales boxset, specifically concerning The Android Invasion, a Terry Nation-penned adventure from 1975 starring Tom Baker and Lis Sladen as the Doctor and Sarah Jane.

The story is notable for being the last “full” UNIT tale, featuring John Levene and Ian Marter as RSM John Benton and former TARDIS traveller Harry Sullivan. Also in the cast is veteran character actor Milton Johns (who later appeared in 1978′s The Invasion of Time as the treacherous, toady Castellan Kelner and had previous played Theodore Benik in 1967′s The Enemy of the World). Younger viewers may recognise Johns from his regular role in Coronation Street in the 1990s or from the 2000s version of The Basil Brush Show.

The clips have been released by 2|entertain (you can follow them on Twitter @classicdw) and preview some of the extras on The Android Invasion.

In the first clip, Milton Johns and some of the creative crew discuss how believable the ‘eyepatch’ storyline is:

Meanwhile, producer Philip Hinchcliffe recalls being unhappy with one of the cliffhangers, which he decided to “creep up”:

Doctor Who: The UNIT Files is released on January 9th, 2012 and is available for pre-order now for just £22.47 from Amazon!

Funny I thought Seeds of Doom was the final UNIT story! The UNIT troops do come to The Doctor’s aid at Chase manor in episodes five and six so I assumed that they would count as well?

    • Well if it really does count so does The Five Doctors…

The Doctor was freelancing throughout The Seeds of Doom – I can see what you mean but I’ve never thought of it as a UNIT story. It doesn’t even feel like a Doctor Who story in many (very good) ways!

If we are being picky then surely Battlefield is the last ‘full’ UNIT story of ‘classic’ series given that it featured the Brig in uniform one last time?

Battlefield is the last official UNIT story no argument there but I’m saying the last regular UNIT adventure. Five Doctors has UNIT personell in it but the organization as such does not feature in the story so that one is anyone’s guess as to being a legitimate story!

    • Well its a funny one isn’t it? Seeds has no recognised UNIT personnel in it, whereas Android Invasion does. The Five Doctors only has the Brig, but then so does Battlefield…

Seeds has Major Beresford in it and although we haven’t seen him before,The Doctor obviously has! The two of them are a UNIT presence in the episode even if it is a small one. The corporal even becomes food for The garden as well!

“The Android Invasion” has long been considered the last appearance of the old UNIT family (albeit only two of them). Therefore, the statement that it is the last full UNIT story is not without foundation. We may yet see more UNIT stories. But since “The Wedding of River Song”, the UNIT family has gone.
