Matt: It Has To Get Better

Mr Matt Smith did a guest spot on the BBC Radio One show on Wednesday morning alongside Zane Lowe and talked a little bit about Doctor Who while he was there!

The Eleventh Doctor talked about filming The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe and some of the differences between the special and filming a normal episode. The actor also mentioned his thoughts on the future of the series and what it (and he) should do in order to keep the show fresh and interesting as the years go by.

Smith certainly bestows a certain charm whenever he appears in an interview scenario and this is certainly no different. What’s especially pleasing is listening to his speech patterns and mannerisms when he is out of character and not playing the Time Lord, the actor certainly has a much more colloquial voice which shows just how much effort he puts into playing the part of the Doctor.

Interestingly enough, Matt also casts an interesting, if not vague; look into his future with the show and where he feels he’s going.

“We’ve got another year to do and who knows what after that. There’s a long way to go. It’s got to get better. That’s the key, It has to get better every year.”

What happens when an eight year old kid watches the 1993 repeat run of Planet of the Daleks? He pretty much ends up here writing about the show that grabbed hold of him and never let go!

Really, Matt? Considering that it (the series) is now virtually cinema-quality, can it really get any better?

Yes I think it can ! Chatting to a friend of mine last night he put his finger on what has been wrong with the last 2 searies…Moffat CAN write good stories (Few if any doubt that !) but he cant “produce” those stories ! Think about it…what are the stand-out stories of the RTD era ? The Empty Child / The Dr Dances and Silence in the library. Both written by the Grand Moff but PRODUCED by RTD and team ! Bring in a good production team who are capable of doing Moffat’s writing justice and the show would improve once again.

I think the problem is the “tent pole construction” of the last series. In service of the Moff’s stories, everything else leaned toward those and serviced them. They other stories were deemed secondary–or so it felt to me—place holders for the next Moff event. I’m glad that things are changing this year as there have been more than a few disgruntled fans I’ve talked to about the series in general.
