The Fourth Doctor @ School!

What’s the coolest thing that you could experience as a kid if you were a Doctor Who fan? Would it be owning your own life size Dalek, owning all the DVD’s that you could possibly want? Or would it be the Doctor himself coming to your school for a visit?

Footage from 1978 has appeared in a recent broadcast Those Were the Days on BBC TV which shows the Fourth Doctor aka Tom Baker arriving at Mersey Street Primary School in Belfast in his instantly recognisable Time Lord threads to meet all the children there.

Some are star struck, some are lost for words but all of the children are clearly having the time of their lives!

Apparently this was Baker’s idea, something that he felt would be a good idea for the children and he was not wrong! You cannot help but smile when you see Baker leading all the children around the school playground running up and down  and up and down, like a friendly pied piper.

In the twenty first century where PR campaigns are ten a penny, it’s not surprising to see actors appear at schools or events for children, Johnny Depp had clearly been watching this clip before he went to a school fully dressed as Captain Jack Sparrow earlier this year.

But seeing Tom Baker doing this brings a smile to the face and a warmth to the heart. It’s the “Awwww” moment of the day.

About the Author

What happens when an eight year old kid watches the 1993 repeat run of Planet of the Daleks? He pretty much ends up here writing about the show that grabbed hold of him and never let go!

I saw this on Iplayer yesterday. Very touching.

    Speaks volumes about Tom himself.
