Matt Smith has used an interview with What’s On TV to reveal what he thinks is the scariest Doctor Who enemy. Surprising nobody, he’s said it was the Silence. He says:
What is wonderful is that they toy with your psyche. They mess with what you know and don’t know and what you can and can’t remember – they can influence your mind. They look horrendous and are really mean. So if you’re under the age of 10, a good sofa to hide behind is essential [one is reminded of the famous Troughton quote “Hold Mummy’s hand if she’s frightened”].
One assumes that as soon as Steven Moffat needs a new monster to promote, Smith’s opinions will suddenly change on which is the scariest, particularly as I’m sure I heard similar quotes from him in the run-up to the beginning of Series 6.
On the subject of similar quotes, the article leads in from the Silence quotes to generate more of a story by quoting a Press Association interview, in which the general impression is that he’s not going anywhere yet. He says of his work life
We work very long hours every day for nine months. The schedule is pretty brutal, but I’d never complain about it. I love playing this role, and I don’t want to give it up anytime soon. I feel very lucky. In the current climate for actors, I’d never say, ‘This is too much’ – quite the opposite, in fact. I’d say, ‘Bring it on.’
Naturally, it all depends on your opinion of Matt Smith’s Doctor whether this news is welcomed, although as usual nobody is confirming anything, least of all whether Smith is staying on past a year from now as he claimed last week. Only time, a Tweet from the Moff himself or a leaked press release will tell.
