“Previously on Doctor Who…”

That’s a phrase that we’re not used to hearing when an episode of Doctor Who first starts. It’s been a template statement for many American television serials over the years; some of you may be familiar with statements such as “previously on Buffy the Vampire Slayer” or “previously on LOST”. Many shows have so many twisty turney elements to them that the audience needs a brief refresher when they start an episode to catch up on past events.

Whilst we thankfully don’t have Matt Smith or Karen Gillan’s voice providing this little snippet of dialogue, as it would surely make the show as self-aware as when the Doctor sported question marks on his clothes and umbrellas, BBC America has produced a brief catch up video for all those who may have fallen behind on what’s been happening in series six of Doctor Who.

Whilst the plot’s aren’t necessarily baffling to follow, there has been a longer than usual break between episodes this year and so it’s nice to be able to find out any snippets that you may have missed.

It does also help to integrate Doctor Who to the American audience that may have missed the first few episodes, using a template “catch up” video that they are used to from other shows.

Doctor Who returns to BBC America on August 27th, and to BBC One sometime in the near future…

What happens when an eight year old kid watches the 1993 repeat run of Planet of the Daleks? He pretty much ends up here writing about the show that grabbed hold of him and never let go!
