Tom Baker & Big Finish

After months of rumours, speculation, hints, announcements from Tom Baker and nothing from Big Finish, the producers of original Doctor Who audio dramas have finally confirmed that the legendary Fourth Doctor actor is indeed on board with them and will record a 6-part series during the summer for release in January 2012!

This isn’t Tom’s first foray into audio drama of course – he’s already taken part in two excellent audio series for BBC Audiobooks alongside Richard Franklin as Mike Yates in Paul Magrs’ Hornet’s Nest and Demon Quest. These are cosier, more traditional types of audiobook, however, as opposed to the full-cast audios that Big Finish produce!

In addition to the first series of 6 adventures, a 5-disc boxset of Lost Stories and a second series of 7 adventures are also scheduled, meaning that Tom isn’t just popping in to say hello, he’s on full alert as the Doctor once again!

“As many of you will know, we’ve been talking to Tom for a long time,” says Big Finish executive producer Nick Briggs. “David Richardson and I went to visit Tom at his home not long ago to chat about it all. We had a really great time.

“At that point, I sincerely felt that had we taken a microphone with us, Tom would have started there and then – but, of course, there are always finer details to sort out. Now that our plans are in place, and Tom has enthusiastically told the world that we’re going ahead, we thought it best follow-up with our own announcement. Rest assured that in the coming months we will be releasing news on this as soon as we are able.”

Tom will be joined in these adventures by Louise Jameson as Leela and Mary Tamm as Romana I… and the wording on the Big Finish website doesn’t make it any clearer than that!
