American Awakening

This year is certainly another good year to be a Doctor Who fan as the amount of merchandise continues to grow!

One of the most popular items is of course the BBC’s “classic” Doctor Who DVD range which has been stepping up the number of releases over the last couple of years to get the entire existing back catalogue for Doctors one through eight made available to the public on shiny disc format. It’s been a busy start to the year in the UK with eight releases taking us up until the end of March 2011 (remember when there used to be one every two months?!) and the same is taking place over in the USA as well, with the BBC stepping up their release schedule  for the good American people.

With that in mind, anyone who’s building their collection of digital Doctor Who in the land of the free might like to know that you’ve got not one but two releases coming your way in July. Those that were worried that there was only going to be one and that the BBC were going back on their promise of two releases a month, don’t panic!

BBC and distributor Warner Home Video have announced that the 1966 First Doctor story The Gunfighters will be released with the final Peter Davison story to be released on DVD, The Awakening.

Over in the UK, the two releases comprise a box set called Earth Story; whether that will remain the case for the US release is yet to be seen. But rejoice, your collection is almost complete, hooray for that!

The Gunfighters will be a single disc release consisting of four episodes. Extras include a commentary, two featurettes, PDF files and the brilliant production subtitles which, as always, offer a fascinating insight into the making of the story. For the Fifth Doctor’s adventure, The Awakening, you’re going to be treated to three featurettes, audio commentary, extended and deleted scenes, a photo gallery, PDF materials and production subtitles. Both stories will be in full screen format, English mono soundtrack and English subtitles.

A release date has been (more or less) confirmed as July 12th 2011 with The Gunfighters costing $24.98 SRP and The Awakening priced at $14.98 SRP but as ever, things are subject to change so keep your eyes peeled.

About

What happens when an eight year old kid watches the 1993 repeat run of Planet of the Daleks? He pretty much ends up here writing about the show that grabbed hold of him and never let go!
