US Fans to Get Who Sooner?
Ding-dong merrily on… meh. Christmas maybe over and everyone has reverted back to humbugging everyone else but there’s still a little Christmas joy being spread for this seasons special, the heartfelt A Christmas Carol.
Thanks to the unprecedented amount of American fans downloading this years and other Christmas specials, the lull between the UK air date and its US counterpart looks set to shrink.
For previous episodes fans had been bypassing networks like BBC America and the Sy Fy Channel altogether and downloading episode in order to get them sooner and not cut for time.
Aaron Cistrelli, president of the Doctor Who fan-club Time Meddlers of Los Angeles, based in Southern California, said:
“We’re not waiting for it to air over here, we’re watching it online. We’re downloading it ahead of time. And not only that, we’re watching the unedited versions. It wasn’t until recently that (BBC America) started to … air them unedited for time.”
To combat fans heading else where senior vice president of programming at BBC America, Richard de Croce has already put plans into motion for season six to be aired straight after the UK:
“All that downloading “means (American fans) love the shows so much they can’t wait to see them and that’s the world we live in, in terms of technology, quite honestly. So let’s air these shows as quickly as we can post the UK’s transmission.”
Now doesn’t that make you believe in the magic of Christmas…
