Ever watched a quiz show and got so involved that you’re shouting out the answers at the screen? There’s that moment when you know you’re right and as the answer you’ve been shouting comes up, you think “It should be me on there!â€
But with one particular quiz, Channel 4’s Million Pound Drop, you wouldn’t want to be involved at all. It seems that one couple who appeared on the show were asked a Doctor Who related question for the value of £325,000 and the answer they gave was wrong. Apparently.
When asked “Which actor portrayed the Doctor for the longest time?†they were asked to choose between Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann, Christopher Eccleston or David Tennant . While it’s up for debate within fan realms as to who really served the longest (Tom Baker’s seven year run with no breaks is impressive), the realistic answer is Sylvester McCoy who was the face of the Time Lord for ten years.
The couple decided to half their choice down between McCoy and McGann but at that point were informed that it was in fact David Tennant who had done the most time (leaving a fair few Doctor Who fans shouting at their TV screens across England).
Channel Four was soon corrected of their error and issued the following statement:
“Having spoken to the Doctor Who production team at the BBC, the Million Pound Drop producers have confirmed that the correct answer to this question was Sylvester McCoy and not David Tennant as shown on the broadcast on Friday 5th November…this is due to Sylvester McCoy’s final appearance in a 1996 TV movie…we apologize for this oversight and as a result, the contestants, Johnny and Dee, will return to the show to finish the game this Friday or Saturday at 10pm on Channel 4 with the £325,000 they placed on McCoy.â€
So all’s well that ends well! Unless you’re a Tom Baker fan.
