Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith has talked about his preparation when gearing up to play the role of writer Christopher Isherwood in the BBC film Christopher and His Kind.
You can’t accuse Smith of not properly preparing for his roles! The actor actually went as far as to take a trip to Berlin where Isherwood spent his early years and visit Don Bachardy, who was Isherwood’s life partner. Smith commented:
“I went to meet Don who was very charming and inviting, and he said to me that one of Christopher’s most memorable qualities was the fact that he was very quiet and very at ease,” Smith said of the meeting,
“I think it’s very ambitious as a piece of filmmaking. I’m very grateful for them giving me the platform and the opportunity to do it…I think that’s one of the things about being an actor, you can be anything!”
This new film could very well cement Matt in the public eye as one of Britain’s more versatile actors. Doctor Who has made him a household name but as we all know playing the role of the Doctor can sometimes typecast an actor (not a bad thing to be typecast in at all!) so the projects they undertake in-between series are very important for them.
Christopher and His Kind is part of a new season of dramas produced by the BBC and will be airing soon.
