Is David Tennant in The Hobbit?

Ok, this is a weird one; despite saying that he hasn’t been contacted by producers of The Hobbit several months ago, www.deadline.com is reporting that former Doctor Who David Tennant is about to be announced as appearing in the movie.

Interestingly, however, there is no reference to Seventh Doctor Sylvester McCoy’s expected casting in new film, which also refers to Sherlock‘s Martin Freeman taking the lead Bilbo Baggins role (played by Ian Holm in the Lord of the Rings trilogy) – this is something that he had already turned down but apparently the producers are keen to have him.

So what’s the score with David Tennant’s sudden return involvement?

Back in January, we reported that Simon Pegg – at one point Tennant’s co-star in Burke and Hare (due in cinemas soon) – had made the following tweets:

“David Tennant had to drop out of B&H but by sheer glorious serendipity a legend of Middle Earth and Skull Island has come aboard. Welcome AS“

Then, we wondered if the already long-held rumours of David Tennant starring in The Hobbit had come to fruition. Allegedly, the above tweet by Simon Pegg (since been deleted) was swiftly followed by another since deleted update:

“Looks like David Tennant will be visiting Middle Earth”

If true, best of luck to Tennant – while too tall to play a Hobbit (a small human, for the uninitiated) we’re sure he would be a perfect fit.
