Doctor Who – The Brilliant Book 2011
To help everyone celebrate the re-re-birth of TV’s number one science fiction show this rather smart looking, shiny hardback has been released which will help us through the long wait until the Christmas 2010 special to hit our screens!
With contributions from Steven Moffatt, writers Mark Gatiss and Gareth Roberts and other prominent members of the cast and crew, this is a fun if not too serious reflection of Matt Smith’s first season at the controls of the TARDIS. It captures the positive vibes of those 13 episodes and reminded me of the time when Doctor Who wasn’t on and fans were producing their own celebrations of certain eras of the show’s history. It’s jokey, informative with some great exclusive snaps and cracking original illustrations including montages of each episode that conjure up images of those classic Virgin re-issue book covers.
There’s much to enjoy here and is a bold mixture of fact and fun with a dash of old school DWM added for fine measure. For anyone expecting a watered down Doctor Who Adventures kind of a release, you will be disappointed as this is aimed at the more mature fan. Think of those old yearbooks but done the way you wanted them and you’ll have the idea of what this is all about. Each episode is covered in detail with plenty of behind the scenes shots such as the Silurian make-up designs and construction, the new Daleks and the people who nearly made it into The Lodger episode! I don’t want to go into too much detail here as its great just turning the page and seeing features that are laid-back, well constructed and a total joy to read.
Probably the main coup for this release is the inclusion of brand new fiction from Brian Aldiss, not bad for a TV show that’s been looked down upon by many of his peers.
So then, with a title that ends with a date indicates to me that this won’t be the last Brilliant Book, I sincerely hope there’s more for many years to come. In a word, BRILLIANT.
Available now, The Brilliant Book 2011 has an RRP of £12.99 – but you can pick it up from Amazon for 50% less, just £6.48!
