Manning’s ‘Genuine Pleasure’

Katy Manning has revealed that she enjoyed reprising her role as companion Jo Grant for Series 4 of  The Sarah Jane Adventures.

Jo, who was last seen parting with the Third Doctor in The Green Death in 1973 returns in a two part serial; Death of the Doctor alongside current Doctor Matt Smith.

Manning speaking on her official website said she found climbing back into the role of Jo surprisingly easy.

“I was really surprised at how it all came back, and how quickly I felt like Jo again. It was a genuine pleasure to be playing her once more.”

Despite her ease, Manning acknowledged that Jo has changed dramatically since she step away from the TARDIS.

You’ll have to watch the programme to see what I mean, but Russell T Davies (episode writer) has done a wonderful job of showing how Jo has developed over the years.

You can still see the young and awestruck girl she was, but that’s been tempered by experience and maturity – not replaced, but tempered.

In an episode of firsts, this will be the first time that Jo and Sarah Jane have appeared alongside each other, though not the first time convention veterans Manning and Elisabeth Sladen have bumped into each other;

We share so much in common having worked on the show, particularly wonderful memories of Jon Pertwee. It was fantastic finally getting the chance to work together.

In terms of how Jo and Sarah Jane got on – you’ll have to watch the show to see if there was any friction, or if it was plain sailing.

The fourth series of The Sarah Jane Adventures is currently expected to begin on Monday 11th October.

About the Author

Everyone has a favourite Doctor and mine - just for his honesty, his fairness and his ability to not notice the Master's awful, awful disguises/anagrams (Sir Gilles Estram!?!) - has to be the Fifth Doctor, Peter Davison. The stories didn’t serve him as well as his acting served those stories.
