Cumberbatch: Not Offered Doctor Who

Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch has confirmed what Kasterborous has been insisting all along – that he didn’t “turn down” Doctor Who because he was never offered it.

Sherlock star Benedict CumberbatchAfter being quoted as having had a conversation with David Tennant:

“David and I talked about it but I thought it would have to be radically different.”

…the Press went into overdrive, with certain publications claiming that Cumberbatch’s turning down of the opportunity to pursue the role were in fact him “turning down” the chance to play the Doctor! Whether or not this was an orchestrated attack on Matt Smith and/or the BBC continues to be a matter of speculation.

Of course recently we’ve had news that Matt Smith auditioned for the role of Dr John Watson in Steven Moffat’s other successful show of 2010, however Cumberbatch has revealed to The Sunday Times that he was never in the frame to take over from David Tennant

“I’d turn it down anyway,” he insisted. “Jumping onto school stages and saying, ‘I am the Doctor’, it’s not where I want to go.”

So – as you can see, Benedict Cumberbatch was never likely to play the Doctor.
