SFX Take the Scripts

SFX.com has published an article which breaks down the main plot of Series 5/season 31 of Doctor Who. Past Doctor Who related publications by SFX have had fantastic episode breakdowns for series one to three and this article also manages to raise a few smiles.

If you’ve ever read Total Film magazine, you may (or may not be) aware that they publish an “abridged script”  of a recently released film, pointing out its foibles. SFX have done the same for Doctor Who Series 5. For example:

THE DOCTOR uses his SONIC SCREWDRIVER to save the day over and over again. From now on the SONIC SCREWDRIVER will be known as the DEUS EX MACHINA.

THE DOCTOR: I need to short-circuit this thingamummy wotsit to save the world! Let me apply some deus ex machina right here… Hey, while I’m doing that, do you like my bow tie? Bow ties are cool.
VIEWERS: [staring at him]

And also another little gem:

THE DOCTOR takes AMYPOND on lots of ADVENTURES. They visit WORLD WAR TWO and meet WINSTON CHURCHILL, come face-to-stalk with DALEKS, find themselves riding a SPACE WHALE and encounter some VAMPIRES in VENICE.

AMYPOND: Scotland’s still better than any of this.
THE DOCTOR: Wales isn’t bad either.

This is a lovely little look at a series that SFX clearly loves so if you go to their website and read it, don’t take it too seriously!

What happens when an eight year old kid watches the 1993 repeat run of Planet of the Daleks? He pretty much ends up here writing about the show that grabbed hold of him and never let go!

    “Yesterday Meredith Burdett wrote:-

io9.com has written an article to fill the gap of “no Nu-who” on BBC America this week by listing plot devices that they don’t like being overused in Steven Moffat episodes of Doctor Who. It’s an interesting and quite frankly accurate look at what keeps recurring in the world of Doctor Who but at the same time, why would you want to insult a show that has given out so much?

It’s best to just enjoy the show, rather than pick away at the obvious. It has been running for more or less fifty years now and there are bound to be some similarities!”

So, when SFX.com point out lame Nu Who plot devices, “it’s a lovely little look at the series,” but when io9.com do the same it “insult[s] a show that has given out so much”.

    Biased much?

  2. Well, it’s purely Meredith’s opinion – personally I thought the SFX article was a sub-sixth form smugfest…

Not much different to their usual content then?;) For five years SFX have been sucking up to RTD as if their lives depended on it, justifying their sycophancy by saying, “but we’re just big fans of Dr Who,” and now RTD has left they start pointing out all the things that have been glaringly obvious since episode 1, series 1 “Rose” in 2005. Perhaps this has something to do with the recent revelation that RTD has an SFX magazine subscription?
