Restarting Torchwood Series 4

The SFX website has spoken to Russell T Davies recently regarding the new series of Torchwood, due to air in 2011, and how the series continues from Children of Earth.

Russell doesn’t reveal all that much in terms of spoilers but commented on the new way that the series would be developed and made with one of the big changes being a “writer’s room.”

Torchwood creator Russell T DaviesDavies has written the first episode of the new series but may not write anymore as there are plenty of interested parties wanting to write a script themselves. Russell finished by mentioning what viewers could expect from the 2011 series, which follows on from Children of Earth

“For faithful viewers you’ll see the same people in the same world, following on. Though it also starts from scratch, because there’s a brand new Starz audience there sitting waiting to be scooped up, new viewers coming to it.

“I restarted Doctor Who in 2005 from scratch, so I know what I’m doing.

“I did it with Children Of Earth, actually – that practically tripled Torchwood’s audience, and no one said to me that they were lost. So it’s a new starting point and yet… It’s still Gwen, it’s still Jack, and hopefully more. You’ll feel very comfortable with it. And there’s great new American characters coming into it.

“Bear in mind, of course, Captain Jack, he’s American as well, so it doesn’t seem quite as alien, I think, as if you suddenly introduced American characters into Emmerdale or something!”

Captain Jack was born in the Boshane Penisular. He is not American.

    • Although, of course, we don’t know where the Boshane Peninsular is…

Ummm… Am I the only one sensing a touch of megalomania creeping in here? What was it that Colin Baker’s Dr said about the number of I’s in a sentence making one seem rather egotistical??

Russell dear, you are very talented and have a great imagination, but I think you had a little help with Dr Who and Torchwood….
