According to Entertainment Weekly, details of new characters for the upcoming series of Torchwood Series 4 have been released.
While John Barrowman and Eve Myles will continue in the roles as Jack Harkness and Gwen Cooper, they are set to be joined by a new regular character, Rex Matheson, who is apparently a “CIA agent born to make waves” who also possesses a “wicked” sense of humour.
It seems that there will be another two recurring characters – apparently Oswald Jones is both a convicted murderer and paedophile; meanwhile Esther Katusi, is a young CIA agent “who learns what she’s really made of only when she’s forced to”.
These additional roles seem to be important, to the overall series dynamic and storyline, although of course at this stage it is difficult to speculate how things will fit together.
Torchwood Series 4 will be produced by BBC America, BBC Wales and Starz Entertainment, with Russell T Davies and Julie Gardner continuing in their Executive Producer roles.

A paedophile? Woah, that’s a risky and bold move. I hope that the subject is dealt with sensitively, or we’re looking at seriously alienating the audience on both sides of the pond. I know perfectly well that Russell is no fool, so I’m sure it will be handled well. I wonder if this is the reason Fox rejected the show?
Also – what’s this about the CIA? As we know, Torchwood exists outside the government – so it’s interesting to speculate what the Agency will make of them. Could they initially be investigating Torchwood? Maybe Jack and Gwen need help Stateside, and actively seek out the CIA, or the other way round with the Americans seeking out the alien expertise of our heroes? That last option is very unlikely – the CIA aren’t known for their humility! It strikes me too, that ‘an agent born to make waves’ would be a very poor agent – the whole point of being a spy is to be covert and remain unnoticed! I’m really looking forward to this new series.
Yipes! Another Jones! Russell does love his Joneses! Let’s see now – Martha, Ianto, Harriet. From Queer as Folk there’s Stuart Alan Jones, and in Mine All Mine there’s Yanto Jones. The man’s obsessed!
