Den of Geek has revealed that current Time Lord Matt Smith auditioned for the role of Watson in the new Sherlock Holmes television series a week before he auditioned for the role of the Doctor.
The new take on the classic sleuth has been created and devised by Doctor Who gods Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss and stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Holmes and well known British actor Martin Freeman as his loyal sidekick Watson.
However, before Freeman was cast Matt Smith turned up to have a go at interpreting the famous literary character. Mark Gatiss commented about Cumberbatch and Freeman:
“They got on immediately… it just clicked.”
And how lucky we are that we got fantastic Matt to be the new TARDIS key holder instead, things could have been so different. Looking at things from another angle, Smith has proved in the 2010 series of Doctor Who that he has all the qualities and quirks that make a fantastic Doctor but his acting abilities could also have worked to create a great take on Sherlock Holmes.
Looks like you were auditioning for the wrong part Matt!
