Matt Smith Surprised

Matt Smith has expressed surprise at the degree of popularity of Doctor Who in the USA following his trip their to promote new series on BBC America.

Doctor Who star Matt Smith - AmazedThe Eleventh Hour kicked off the series on Saturday evening, and Smith has revealed how he and his co-star and executive producer have been bowled over by the reaction.

“I was just in New York,” he said. “Me and Karen [Gillan] and Steve [Moffat], we were overwhelmed by the enthusiasm.

“I thought there was not a Doctor Who community in the US but it’s got legs here. It’s truly been an exceptional response that not any of us can fathom.

“It inspires humility to see how they’ve embraced that first episode,” he said. “I think that there are better episodes coming, actually, which is exciting.”

As you can see from the various films that have been released by BBC America (see this index) reaction Stateside has been far from muted. While on a smaller scale, it truly isn’t that far from the one given to Tennant, Barrowman and Davies at the 2010 San Diego Comic Con.
