Matt Smith: Avoids Reviews

Reaction to The Eleventh Hour has been good – but with Doctor Who star Matt Smith intentionally avoiding reviews, he might not be aware of this. Sure, Steven Moffat might have told him over the phone, or they might have spent the whole time insulting each other.

So, is there a chance the new star of Doctor Who doesn’t actually know that the reaction to The Eleventh Hour has been favourable?

The Times’ (still free) Ed Potton told him that the episode “really is rather good,” to which the Eleventh Doctor reacted:

“You don’t have to say that!” Smith says, exuding the same mix of hectic and smooth that characterises his Doctor. But I’m not the first: reviews have been strong. On the advice of the Doctor Who alumna Lindsay Duncan, Smith hasn’t read them, but says: “If they’re good it does filter through. We couldn’t have asked for better.”

It must be quite strange to see yourself commented upon in the press – this interview in The Times also features reference to a gift book sent to Smith by a website done in response to some angry “anyone but him!” mood found elsewhere in cyberspace.

Funny old world, isn’t it…?
