Doctor on Call

The Doctor Who Tour of Britain is underway, with the BBC Outreach bus taking the stars of the new series around the UK to meet young fans and screen previews of The Eleventh Hour.

Press coverage has already begun, and after visiting Belfast yesterday the duo were in Gillan’s home town of Inverness today. A BBC blog from Scotland arts correspondent Pauline McLean provides additional information, such as explaining that the location chosen in Inverness – Eden Court Theatre – was graced by the screening and Q&A with local schoolkids in order to highlight impending cuts from the Highland Council. While many of the attending children currently enjoy drama lessons courtesy of the theatre, these drama courses face cuts.

Let’s hope that the council recognise the importance of local arts beyond the slim chance of fame and fortune that many long for. Local arts and entertainment can stimulate regional economies and provide a useful community focus.

Later this week, the BBC Bus visits Sunderland, Salford and Northampton – the latter the home town of Matt Smith. Meanwhile, you can also catch brief video interviews with Matt Smith and Karen Gillan (the latter discussing her accent) at STV.com.
