King David

David Tennant to play Edward, Duke of Windsor?Music legend Madonna is apparently in talks to direct a movie about the former king, Edward VIII and his American divorcee consort, Wallis Simpson – and according to Variety she has David Tennant in mind as the male lead.

Digital Spy reports that the Queen of Pop had originally considered playing Simpson herself, but now Vera Farmiga is said to be lined up for the role of the New York socialite.

Edward VIII was King of the United Kingdom and the British dominions as well as Emperor of India for most of 1936, but relinquished the title after abdicating following the constitutional crisis that enveloped his engagement of marriage to Wallis Simpson. He later became Duke of Windsor, allowing his brother George VI (Queen Elisabeth II’s father) to become monarch.

It’s a fascinating story that involves the prime ministers from across the Commonwealth, the Church of England (and Windsor’s role as its head) and the very different attitude towards divorce – we’re pretty sure that David Tennant would make a marvellous Duke of Windsor.
