The grand old man of Doctor Who – Fourth Doctor Tom Baker – was interviewed recently by the Blackpool Gazette for a feature recalling the occasion when he switched on the seaside town’s famous lights.
It was in 1975 that Baker – then a little over a year into his run as the Doctor – switched on Blackpool Illuminations.
Speaking to the Blackpool Gazette’s Memory Lane feature in which readers are prompted by photos to recall events from the past, Tom said:
“The switch-on marked me down in the history of Blackpool, a town that I love because the people who are there are absolutely determined to enjoy themselves. So much so that
the fun is infectious.”
Tom also provided a voiceover for adverts for the 1982 Illuminations TV campaign with the line
“And this year we have lasers too!”
Imagine that! Got to love the 80s…
