Even More Rose Tyler?

According to reports online (both in the GallifreyBase forum and various mainstream publications) former Doctor Who co-star Billie Piper was snapped on location at Neath Abbey yesterday.

Obviously if true this is a massive spoiler – yet the evidence is inconclusive at this point save long distant snaps that show a blonde lady in a floral dress.

Local radio presenter Jay Curtis was on the set and told reporters various vague details and aimless speculation, but nothing of any real substance – save for the presence of actor Terence Hardiman (The Demon Headmaster) so it is difficult to get a handle on exactly what the truth is on this matter.

However… if it the news is true – if Billie Piper is reprising Rose Tyler in 2010, then exactly what is the point?

What is the point of a new companion? What is the point in regeneration, reinvention, moving on, hiring new writers?

Returning to a character who left the show as a regular 3 years ago, has made appearances in 4 episodes since and is likely to be a key element of the Christmas specials this year might satisfy short-term story requirements but in the long term and for those of us with longer memories it is digging up and recycling a successful past in a supposedly infinite universe.

While the context of this supposed return is not known (it could be a full return, it could be a phantom) is not known however there is plenty of space for speculation, a bit of bewilderment and lots of discussion…

As we say, this all stems from speculation based on the report of a South Wales news organ and blurry snapshots. For the moment there is no proof – but most importantly if true there is no context.
