Tennant of the Shires?

Guilermo del Torro is apparently busying himself with storyboards and casting for the Peter Jackson produced adaptation of The Hobbit – and Doctor Who star David Tennant is apparently a favourite to play the young Bilbo Baggins!

Played by veteran British actor Ian Holm in the Lord of the Rings films The Fellowship of the Ring and Return of the King, the prequel story of The Hobbit sees Frodo’s uncle Bilbo discover the very ring that causes all of the trouble in the later movies – and his adventures aren’t exactly without incident either.

Tennant lines up alongside fellow Scot James McAvoy and Harry Potter star Daniel Ratcliffe (who surely doesn’t need such another high profile role!) while The Office star Martin Freeman is also a popular choice.

Personally, I feel David Tennant is a bit too gangly to look convincing and a 4 foot high Hobbit – Ian Holm is apparently too old at 78, however, so it certainly looks like a younger actor will get the part.
