The BBC expenses scandal rumbles on, with former the BBC Controller of Drama Commissioning Jane Tranter again linked to some financial excesses – with a Doctor Who theme.
According to Digital Spy, expense claims of the publicly funded broadcaster’s top 30 managers each earning a salary of over £160,000 have been published – detailing how licence payers money was spent on pampering stars.
Drama executive Jane Tranter spent £102 on a hamper for Love Actually star Bill Nighy and £3,000 worth of flowers in three years for celebrities including Doctor Who actors Billie Piper and David Tennant.
There’s no reason given at any stage for these expenditures, so it is difficult to judge exactly how appropriate or inappropriate such gifts were.
However it should be borne in mind that what we’re seeing is the culmination of a government plan 20 years in the making that the BBC should be more like a commercial organisation. Sadly the culture hasn’t quite matched the aim, leading to the bizarre state of affairs we’re not seeing that make it difficult for the BBC to defend their cutbacks.
