Doctor Who News Matt Smith's Doctor Who unveiled to the press

Look – The Eleventh Doctor!

It’s all go at the BBC this morning as the first look at the Eleventh Doctor in costume with his new companion Amy Pond – played by Matt Smith and Karen Gillan – are revealed!

With filming complete on the David Tennant/Russell T Davies era of Doctor Who, the Matt Smith/Steven Moffat era begins in earnest – and as he arrived on set this morning for location shooting, Matt Smith had a few words:

“I feel very privileged and proud to be part of this iconic show.

“The scripts are brilliant – I’m excited about the future and all the brilliant adventures I get to go on as the Doctor.”

So what can we expect from the new Doctor, if this tweed jacket, bow tie and boots look is anything to go by?

As an outfit it certainly isn’t a million miles from the attire of older Doctors such as Tom Baker’s Fourth or Peter Davison’s Fifth. However let’s hope it is an outfit to be occasionally changed and enhanced and not a cricket motif costume or “Joseph coat of many colours”.

With today’s announcement it is of course confirmed that Karen Gillian’s character Amy does have a surname – “Pond”. It’s quite a plain, unassuming name, isn’t it? We expect Ms Pond to be anything but plain and unassuming however as she becomes the Doctor’s latest companion.

New showrunner Steven Moffat is certainly expecting things to go well between the pair.

“Matt and Karen are going to be incredible, and Doctor Who is going to come alive on Saturday nights in a whole new way.”
