Planet of the Dead SPOILERS

Beware – in this news item the Tritovore is revealed!

That’s right – with Planet of the Dead set for our screens in just a few weeks, photos have gone into circulation revealing the crew on set as well as narrative stills and posed shots.

Most interesting among these – other than photos of guest star Michelle Ryan – are the photos of the Tritovore, seen here.

What is most interesting about the creature is that it appears to be the antithesis to everything writer Russell T Davies is said to have hoped, as we reported back in January:

A set source said: "Scriptwriters are confident they’ll make a huge impact.

"Everyone remembers the Daleks and the Cyberman, but not a lot else if they’re honest.

"The Tritovore will change that. They are disgusting and will last long in the memory."

Now, we all know that first appearances can be deceiving – and while the Tritovore does indeed appear to be memorable, it doesn’t in any way, shape or form appear to be anything resembling "classic", as the comparison to Daleks and Cybermen implies.

I would even go so far as to suggest that it looks like an Ood with a fly mask on.

The similarities are there – boiler suit, elaborate and organic looking head-piece – and yet there are also interesting parallels with the David Cronenberg version of The Fly…
