Lindsay Duncan Casting

Scots actress Lindsay Duncan has been cast as the Doctor’s companion in the the second Doctor Who special of 2009, the BBC has confirmed.

As Adelaide she will apparently portray the Doctor’s “cleverest and most strong-minded companion yet” – not too far a leap from her earlier well-regarded role as one Margaret Thatcher.

Ms Duncan will be seen in the second special of 2009, likely to be seen on our screens either in the Autumn or over Christmas.

Duncan said: “I’m thrilled to be involved in Doctor Who. I’ve never done anything like this before and I’m really looking forward to working with David Tennant and the Doctor Who team.”

The as-yet-untitled second episode is from the pen of executive producer Russell T Davies and writer Phil Ford, with production set to start in spring 2009.

Davies said: “Lindsay is an incredibly talented actress and I’ve been an admirer of her work for some time.

“We are delighted to announce that she will be joining the team and playing the Doctor’s most strong-minded companion yet.”

An excellent piece of casting – let’s hope the rest of the production lives up to this early high bar.
