BBC Radio Sci-Fi Season

Veteran actor Sir Derek Jacobi – who has twice played the Master – is making a return to sci-fi with BBC Radio’s new cross-station sci fi series.

Jacobi appeared as Professor Yana (in truth the Master) in the 2007 story Utopia, as well as appearing as the Master in the BBC webcast Scream of the Shalka in 2003. He possesses a further Doctor Who credit as the star of the Big Finish play from the Doctor Who Unbound series, playing disturbed writer Martin Bannister in Deadline.

Other names involved in the sci-fi season include Catherine McCormack, Jason Isaacs, Alex Jennings and Danny Webb (The Satan Pit/The Impossible Planet) and the feeling is that the success of Doctor Who has raised the profile of sci-fi and genre programming with actors and audiences.

BBC Radio 4 commissioning editor Jeremy Howe said the success of Doctor Who meant actors are keen to appear in science fiction productions.

“There is a queue of people wanting to be in science fiction, because it’s seen to be sexy,” he said.

Sexy sci-fi? Imagine trying to tell that to someone in the 80s and 90s…
