Knowing Me, Doctor Who…

Steve Coogan for Doctor Who? That was the question posed to the comedian recently when he was interviewed during his first tour in around 10 years.

BBC Radio 1 Newsbeat (is it me, or is that such an old, yesterday, 1980s "hip" "trendy" and downright naff name for a news bulletin?) spoke to Coogan, and alongside lots of questions about Alan Partridge (there’s more on that over at Quintessential Comedy) they asked him the big question…

Your name has been thrown into the hat for the next Dr Who. Is that something you would consider doing?

Well, I think I would be rather good but I might be a little bit too old.

I’m happy to take a meeting with them if they want to call me but I won’t be banging on their door with a begging bowl.

It’s a very interesting possibility – certainly if there was a list containing an actor known primarily as a comedian, I would expect Coogan to be on it…
