Colin Salmon – Latest Actor Linked

A popular red-top tabloid has kept the Eleventh Doctor Who rumourmill turning today with their news that Colin Salmon is the next Doctor.

Salmon – whose credits include Soldier Soldier, Prime Suspect and three Brosnan-era James Bond movies – is the latest in a line of black actors suggested for the role in the media (although no mention of Denzel Washington as yet), and was also touted for the James Bond role prior to Daniel Craig’s casting

Apparently a BBC spokesman reported:

"He made a good impression when he appeared and bosses think the time is right to have the first black Doctor."

Colin Salmon of course played the part of Dr Moon in Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead, written by new showrunner Steven Moffat, the man with the job of casting the next Doctor Who.

It isn’t inconceivable that Salmon is the man, given the amount of rumour talk that the Eleventh Doctor would be of non-caucasian origin.

According to IMDb, Salmon is currently shooting in two productions due for release in 2009, with nothing set for release later than that. Salmon is currently priced at 8-1 with Paddy Power. Remember kids, it’s for mugs, etc.

So what does the Prof think about this latest rumour?

Colin Salmon’s just come from nowhere hasn’t he!

It’s clearly his turn as "black lead of the day" following the highly fancied Patterson Joseph and Chiwetel Ejiofor. That said, he would bring a touch of polish and class to the role which would be as much of a contrast to the more common touch of docs 9 and 10. A young Don Warrington wich could be just what the Doctor ordered, but I digress…

Not sure what to make of Tom Ellis though. Bit of a mystery is he, with no obvious star quality – more of a Harry Sullivan I’d say. David Morrissey continues to interest me as well. Perhaps he’s just too obvious? Keep yer money off John Simm though guys – I just can’t see him decamping to Cardiff for 10 months of the year with such a young family.

Meanwhile Bond star Daniel Craig himself has commented that the next James Bond should be black.

"After Barack Obama’s victory I think we might have reached the moment for a coloured 007."

After the election of Barack Obama, there seems to be a whole lot of optimism is the world…
