The Doctor Who production team’s quest for big names to pepper the series with has hit a bit of a problem, according to reports, with veteran character actor David Jason unable to accept a role in Series 4 due to contractual reasons.
First revealed in The Sun (we’ve linked to Digital Spy above), Jason – best known for his roles in BBC comedies Open All Hours and Only Fools and Horses – is allegedly one of a number of ITV stars in old Hollywood-style long-term deals preventing them from working with rival broadcasters.
Known as a “Golden Handcuffs Deal”, Jason is currently star of the inconsistent A Touch of Frost in a deal reported to be worth £5 million
“It’s a shame. He’d have been superb,” a source from the hit time-travelling drama told the tabloid.
Superb or not, he’s not doing it.
Or is he?
After all, he appeared in Sky One’s production of Terry Pratchett’s The Hogfather and is currently filming The Colour of Magic. That doesn’t sound like a golden handcuffs deal to me…
