Could it be true? Is Billie Piper returning to Doctor Who? Or is it just tabloid piffle? Let’s take a look at the evidence…
The original source of this story was Sunday’s edition of the News of the World, so we’re talking a Sun-level of authenticity about this news. According to 24dash.com:
Billie Piper has reportedly been offered £20,000 to return to ‘Doctor Who’.
The actress, who played assistant Rose Tyler in the hit sci-fi drama, is in talks with producers to star in three episodes as part of next year’s series finale.
A source told Britain’s News of the World newspaper: “Billie was a huge hit and bosses know her comeback would thrill audiences.”
A show source added: “We are all very excited that Billie is in course to come back. We’re very close to getting her to sign.
£20,000 doesn’t sound a particularly realistic figure, however the “three episodes” statement, now that is interesting. As we all now know, Doctor Who will be presen tin 2009 in the form of just 3 episodes. Could Rose be returning then?
But then, why should she be returning at all? I mean, what is the point? Their relationship began, had a middle, and ended suddenly. Surely, after Donna and Martha, there is nothing else to be said?
Perhaps this is just a rumour – but then again perhaps it is true. Perhaps Rose Tyler is coming back to Doctor Who, and frankly, if she is then on the face of it this is worst news than having 3 episodes in 2009.
Sure, it’s science fiction at it’s most basic. But for science fiction to work it has to retain credibility. Bringing back a character stranded in a parallel universe removes that credibility. It shakes it up, performs questionable sexual acts on it, and spits on it, leaving it for dead.
It is a M-I-S-T-A-K-E. And it’s not rocket science.
So let’s hope for the best.
Of course, it could all be rehashed nonsense – as Billie recently told www.contactmusic.com:
“A friend of mine told me he’d read about that,
It’s news to me. I think I’d find it very hard to play Rose Tyler again.”
