Doctor Who Film Still Planned!

The Cannes film festival is on at the moment and BBC films are there promoting various new projects which may include a Doctor Who feature film!

According to the BBC news site, head of BBC Films David Thompson:

“…also confirmed that BBC Films is pushing ahead with its plans for a Doctor Who feature, the progress of which is dependent on how the new Doctor Who TV series is received in the US.”

Of course this isn’t the first time a Doctor Who movie has been mooted. Fourth Doctor Tom Baker and Harry Sullivan actor Ian Marter wrote a script for a feature in the 1970s, and more recently the 1996 Paul McGann TVM was the culmination of 10 years of development hell.

While the prospect of a new Doctor Who movie project is very exciting, we’ll err on the side of caution – we’ve still got to get to the end of the first new series yet, let alone see how David Tennant is received as the 10th Doctor Who. Yet another actor playing the role in such a short space of time could cause some identity problems…

For further information on the previous movie attempts, have a look at our interview with writer Jean-Marc Lofficier, whose book The Nth Doctor looked at several of these projects.
