Daleks & News Roundup

As predicted, we can’t get away from the Daleks… Last Sunday’s Observer brought up the subject of ITVs “Hit Me Baby One More TIme” as a competitor to Doctor Who, makinf alusions to Daleks, monsters Doctor’s and companions all the way through the article. Quite an amusing read if the continuing revelation that talented people aren’t that talented is your cup of tea (see: Shakin’ Stevens). The Observer article is available here

Meanwhile in The Times yesterday, Simon Barnes’ article Exterminate! Exterminate! Eyes down for another life-enhancing summer of fear behind the sofa discusses how the Dalek’s return is good preparation for the annual summer of disillusionment the average Briton feels once fronted with a major sporting event such as Wimbledon or an international football tournament. The article is summe dup wonderfully with the early paragraph:

Already we are preparing ourselves for another summer behind the sofa. Tim Henman will soon be making his annual crusade against the Daleks of self-doubt. As ever, the nation will be with him, hardly bearing to watch but still doing so in millions. And it is ten times worse than Doctor Who because we know that the Daleks will win

In yesterdays Guardian, a preview of this weeks Doctor Who was included in the Must List.

The Dalek on Doctor Who

It’s the moment several generations have been waiting for: the return of Doctor Who’s most terrifying enemies. An unsuspecting billionaire has bought one of the metal exterminators – and it has been upgraded. With a 360° swivel-head feature, a shiny gold finish and a stair-defying ability to levitate, this top-of-the-range Dalek is the most fearsome yet.

Doctor Who and me go way back. I first discovered it on my local PBS Station WHYY in the suburbs outside Philadelphia when I was a young kid; though I am uncertain of the exact age.
